How To Be A Good Leader At Work

Being a leader isn’t as easy as we make it out to be. Liken it to being a parent. Your followers ARE going to take cues from you. If they see you doing stuff, they are going to think that THAT’S the correct way of doing tasks, much like how children take cues from their parents. Imagine teaching and taking care of a building’s worth of adult-children. See how you like it.

So yes, leadership isn’t easy. And I am one of the people who say that people are BORN leaders, not made into them. Sure, you can learn how to handle a group but it takes real in-born talent to actually pull a group out of a sticky situation and continue on.

BUT I digress. It doesn’t mean those who want to be leaders but aren’t born with this talent CAN’T be so. They can be, but it isn’t a walk in the park, nor will it be a perfect thing. So here are tips to grant you leadership skills.

Ensure that tasks are completed, supervised and understood

You’re the leader. Get it into their heads that tasks should be understood first and then be completed. Supervise them so they know what they’re doing.

Don’t be afraid to delegate

Everyone has to get busy in order to make things run along smoothly and quickly. It’s if people are doing things at the same time, we don’t have to needlessly waste so many hours.

Get to know your team

Know them and their aspirations. The best thing a leader could do is talk to them and learn about them. It ensures the team that they aren’t following a heartless robot.

Keep your team informed

Don’t leave them in the dark. They have to at least know about all the updates and details that they need to know. Don’t keep to many secrets. Let them know what your goal is so they know where to go from here.

Positive attitude

If you show a more positive attitude, your team will have a better perception of you. Also, the leader’s mood determines everyone else’s, you know?

Your responsibility so you take care of it

Basically, EVERYTHING is your responsibility. But you also have to hold the members in your team accountable for the blunders they do. You’re the one making the bigger decisions too so make sure you seek and take your responsibilities.

Make timely and sound decisions

Easier said than done. But if you have good judgement, I think you’ll be alright.

Be technically proficient

As the one in charge, you have to be EXTREMELY proficient in technology.

Continue to develop your leadership skills

Why stop there? Improve yourself as time goes by so your team will also improve.

Set the right example—YOU’RE the leader, right?

Like how a parent must ask in front of their child, set a better example. Don’t be one of those parents that say “Do as I say, not as I do” because it’s not only bad parenting, it’s also bad leadership skills.
